The area of the gallery is approximately 2500 m2 and comprises three exhibition rooms where displays, happenings, concerts and film shows of Polish as well as foreign artists are held. The building is located right next to the historic Nikiszowiec settlement.

Route chronicle

The Wilson Shaft Gallery in Katowice is located in the pit shaft of the former “Wieczorek” mine and its history started 184 years ago. The architectural design of the shaft was performed by the authors of designs of Giszowiec and Nikiszowiec - the Zillmans. Wilson Shaft is one of the largest galleries in Central Europe. It occupies the area of almost 2500 m2. Still 33 years ago, within the premises of the gallery a mining company operated, which was composed of two pit shafts, a bath, a pithead building and a sorting plant. The story of the famous Janów Group is very strongly connected with the place where the Gallery is situated. It was a group of painters-amateurs, miners by profession, established in the middle of the 20th c. Its members were the inspiration for the film “Angelus” directed by Lech Majewski. The first show of the film was held in the post-industrial space of the Wilson Shaft Gallery in 2001.

The housing estate of Nikiszowiec together with nearby Giszowiec in Katowice is one of the most interesting examples of the workers’ colonies in Europe from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The both settlements designed at the request of the Georg von Giesche’s Erben Company by eminent architects from Berlin - Emil and Georg Zillmann. The construction of Nikiszowiec began in 1908 and ended in 1919. Nine brick blocks public buildings and even a church were built.
The Coal Mine "Wieczorek" in Nikiszowiec, a district of Katowice is one of the longest operating mine in Upper Silesia. Coal mining in Janów began in the late eighteenth century. The origins of the mine "Wieczorek" date back to the first decades of the nineteenth century. For a long time, the mine operated under the name "Giesche", and after WW2, it received its current name. It is worthwhile to see the shaft "Pulaski", at which we can see an impressive pithead building designed by the Zillman brothers.
Walcownia Cynku w Katowicach - Szopienicach to poprzemysłowy zabytek, unikalny budynek na skalę światową, wpisany w industrialne dziedzictwo regionu, który realnie wpłynął na rozwój Śląska. The Sixth Secondary Comprehensive School in Katowice Szopienice is one of the best high schools in the city. Its distinctive brick building stands at the intersection of Lwowska Street and Powstańców Śląskich Square (Silesian Insurgents’ Square). The building was erected in 1904 as a school for girls, which is obvious from the reliefs on the facade. In 1921, the High Command of the Third Silesian Uprising was stationed here. The secondary school was established here in 1947.
Szopienice, which is now part of Katowice, is an old village, already mentioned in 1360, and probably founded at the end of the thirteenth century. It was destroyed in 1430, during the Hussite wars. The village was abandoned for almost for a half century. In the middle of the sixteenth century, the neighboring village of Roździen became a Protestant center, with its own chapel. After several centuries, the village was absorbed by Szopienice. The present church was built in the Gothic style at the turn of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
