The Memorial "Trzy Dęby" (Three Oaks) in Pszczyna

Within the castle park in Pless, in its west part, we can encounter a war cemetery named „Pod Trzema Dębami”, which means “Under Three Oaks." As early as August 1919, men from the area of Pless took an insurgency oath on this secluded clearing. In 1945, the Boy Scouts and the insurgents shot down by the Germans after the invasion of Pless in 1939 were buried here, and soon moved to a common grave of the soldiers killed in the Battle of Ćwiklice.

"Paleya" (from the French word “palais”meaning “palace”), as it is called in Pszczyna, is a historic building of the former Duke's Estates Directorate-General. The building was erected in the northern neoGothic style, at the beginning of the last century. During the First World War, the headquarters of the supreme command of the German imperial army was set up in the building. German Emperor Wilhelm II accompanied by, among others, Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich von Ludendorff often visited the headquarters.
Castle in Pszczyna, which probably dates back to the eleventh century, is now a Baroque residence, whose shape is the result of several reconstructions made in the following centuries. It is one of the most valuable monuments of this kind in Poland, which is additionally reinforced by the fact that its original furnishings have been preserved to this day. For years, after the war, the castle has been a museum with some interesting collections – including, amongothers, militaria and miniatures.
Pszczyna belongs to the most beautiful towns in Silesia. In addition to the spectacular palace and its magnificent market square, there are extensive parks within the town. The castle park is directly adjacent to the palace. It was established as an English-style landscape park in the nineteenth century. Green spaces are dotted with lakes and canals. Old trees provide shade, and rhododendrons intoxicate with their scent. The park is scattered with numerous monuments of landscape architecture.
Pszczyna is an old town founded as a settlement next to the Piast stronghold. The medieval origins are reflected in the layout of the town center characteristic for the contemporary ways of building towns. The heart of the town is the market square surrounded with the neo -Baroque town hall, the Evangelical church and houses of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which is regarded the most beautiful in Silesia. The gridiron plan is enclosed by defense walls. The regularity is only disturbed by the palace and park complex adjacent to the town.
