The Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Szombierki

The winding tower of the mine shaft "Krystyna" in the coal mine "Szombierki" in Bytom is one of the most original constructions of this type in Silesia. It was built in 1928, replacing the original tower named "Kaiser Wilhelm" of the then mine "Hohenzollern". They introduced here a pioneering solution of mounting an electrical winding engine on top of the tower. . Its shape is often compared to the characteristic mining hammer. The winding tower is 57 m tall.

"The nearly 100-year-old power plant ""Szombierki"" in Bytom is called an ""industrial cathedral"". The brick buildings were designed by cousins, Georg and Emil Zillmann, on commission of the Schaffgotsch company. At that time, it was one of the major power plants in Silesia. To this day, we are impressed by its size and style reminiscent of modernism. From a distance, we can see a clock tower and three chimneys. In recent years, the premises of the power plant have become a venue for ambitious cultural events."

Besides the workers’ colonies of the old mine “Joanna” and the iron factory “Julia” in Bobrek, “Kolonia Zgorzelec” is the best preserved workers’ housing estate in Bytom. The historical buildings of the Zgorzelec Colony can be found in the southern district of Bytom - Łagiewniki. They were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries for the families of the workers of the iron factory "Hubertus", later known as "Zygmunt." After 1989, the housing estate was partially revitalized.

We can now take a train ride from Bytom to Miasteczko Śląskie in small coaches of the Upper Silesian Narrow Gauge Railways. We get on the train at the railway station of Bytom Karb Wąskotorowy and get off near the reservoir of Nakło–Chechło. Few people know that it is the oldest operating narrow-gauge railway line in the world. The first stretches of the line were launched as early as in 1853. In the following decades, in Upper Silesia, a network of lines connection was constructed, which in its heyday was nearly 250 km long.

Saint Margaret’s Hill in Bytom, popularly called Małgorzata, which in Polish is a diminutive for Margaret, rises to the south of the today’s city centre. A Piast stronghold, protected by the backwater of the small river Bytomka, was built on the top of the hill. In 1160s, Duke Bolesław IV the Curly of Kraków had funded a church here. The foundation of the chuch was presented on the so called Jaksa Tympanum, which once adorned the church of Saint Michael in Wrocław. Nowadays, on the hill, there is a neo-Gothic church surrounded by a graveyard.
