Historical background

This historic mine has been in existence for 155 years. This is the place where not only miners but also horses worked. Animals lived for many years in specially arranged underground stables at the level of 170 and 320 m. The total length of all underground excavations, both vertical and horizontal, amounts to nearly 3000 meters. The name of the mine - “Guido” - derives from the great industrialist, millionaire and advisor of the king of Prussia, prince Guido Henkel von Donnersmarck. In the mine there is the most deeply located post office in Europe, and maybe even in the world. 87 years ago in “Guido” an exceptional miner worked for some time - cutter Abdul Achmed. As it was revealed later, he was the great-grand son of the Persian emperor who sent him to Silesia so that he could get to know the hardships of miners’ work. Mine superiors praised him for good work.

For dozens of years, the City Museum of Zabrze has collected interesting exhibits concerning the history, culture and both professional and non-professional art. Many of the exhibits are memorabilia from Zabrze and the region. In the years 1938-2006, the museum operated in the building at Kraków Square. Since 2008, the collections have been on display as temporary exhibitions in the building at 6 Trzeciego Maja Street.
W 1983 roku dyrekcja KWK „Zabrze – Bielszowice” podjęła decyzję budowy nowej sztolni szkoleniowo-propagandowej, którą połączono ze starymi wyrobiskami dawnej kopalni „Królowa Luiza”. Powstała wzorcowa sztolnia szkoleniowa, doskonale imitująca prawdziwą kopalnię i posiadająca zmechanizowane ściany wydobywcze. Otwarcie całego zespołu wyrobisk, nazwanego Ośrodkiem Szkolenia Zawodowego i Propagandy Górnictwa przy KWK „Zabrze – Bielszowice”, nastąpiło w grudniu 1985 r. Współcześnie na bazie dawnego ośrodka szkoleniowego i wyrobisk „Królowej Luizy” powstał Park 12C, dedykowany przede wszystkim dla rodzinom z dziećmi i zorganizowanym grupom szkolnym.
The water tower at Zamojskiego Street in Zabrze is one of the largest and most original buildings of this kind not only in Silesia, but also in the whole country. The tower was built in 1909. It is located on an elevated hill, which dominates over the surrounding area. The tower supplied water until after the war. The tower is supported by pillars placed on an octagonal plan and a central pillar. The part with the tank was covered with a mansard roof. The lower floors were occupied by workers’ flats and utility rooms.
The history of the Zabrze church of St Anne goes back to the end of the nineteenth century and is associated with the church and parish of St Andrew, from the local parish of Sr. Anne separated. The need to build a new church was caused by the development of the city and there a growing number of parishioners. The church of St Andrew, built in 1863-1866, could not accommodate them. In the late nineteenth, the parish numbered more than 30 thousand people and comprised the whole city of Zabrze.
""Queen Louise"" in Zabrze is the oldest state-run coal mine in Upper Silesia. Its origins date back to 1791. In 1993, the Mining Heritage Park "Queen Louise” was opened in the mine. The biggest attraction is an underground tourist route with a length of over 1.5 km. A visit to the museum provides a unique opportunity to see up close the work of a miner, mining machines and devices, and even taste some of the Silesian dishes.
The Museum of Coal Mining in Zabrze is located in a historic nineteenth-century building of the former district administration of Zabrze. This building itself is worth seeing, but the most interesting is the museum exhibition, presenting a rich tradition of coal mining. During a visit to the museum we learn almost everything about coal mining technology and the history of the industry, as well as labor, culture and daily life of miners.
