In the city of Zabrze a lot of interesting workers’ housing estates have
survived to this day. They represent various forms of this type
of housing in Silesia. One of the least known workers’
settlements is the so-called Colony B, which is located in the
Zaborze district. It was established in the second half of the
nineteenth century for workers of the expanding coal mine
"Louise". Few-storey family houses called familoki can be
found at Józefa Lompy Street.
""Queen Louise"" in Zabrze is the oldest state-run coal mine in Upper Silesia. Its origins date back to 1791. In 1993, the Mining Heritage Park "Queen Louise” was opened in the mine. The biggest attraction is an underground tourist route with a length of over 1.5 km. A visit to the museum
provides a unique opportunity to see up close the work of a miner, mining machines and devices, and even taste some of the Silesian dishes.
The Church of Saint Hedwig at Wolności Street in Zabrze is one of the monuments on the Wooden Architecture Trail of the Silesia province. The church was erected at the initiative of Fr. Józef Bennek from 1928 to 1929. It was designed by Karol Kuttentodt. The original nice structure of the church was built on a dodecagonal plan with four surrounding towers. The characteristic shape of the Zabrze church distinguishes it from other churches in the region.
In Silesia there are many memorials dedicated
to the victims of communist totalitarianism,
such as the camp in Jaworzno or the monument
commemorating the miners shot dead by the
riot police in the Wujek coal mine. But we can
also find a place where the contemporary
everyday life of the years from 1945 to 1989 is
illustrated in an absurd and comic way. The
grim reality of the state created by Stalin and
ruled by the first secretaries of the Communist
Party sometimes had such a face. This place is
the Museum of the People’s Republic of Poland
in Ruda Śląska.
W 1983 roku dyrekcja KWK „Zabrze – Bielszowice” podjęła decyzję budowy nowej sztolni szkoleniowo-propagandowej, którą połączono ze starymi wyrobiskami dawnej kopalni „Królowa Luiza”. Powstała wzorcowa sztolnia szkoleniowa, doskonale imitująca prawdziwą kopalnię i posiadająca m.in. zmechanizowane ściany wydobywcze. Otwarcie całego zespołu wyrobisk, nazwanego Ośrodkiem Szkolenia Zawodowego i Propagandy Górnictwa przy KWK „Zabrze – Bielszowice”, nastąpiło w grudniu 1985 r. Współcześnie na bazie dawnego ośrodka szkoleniowego i wyrobisk „Królowej Luizy” powstał Park 12C, dedykowany przede wszystkim dla rodzinom z dziećmi i zorganizowanym grupom szkolnym.
The water tower at Zamojskiego Street in Zabrze is one
of the largest and most original buildings of this kind not
only in Silesia, but also in the whole country. The tower
was built in 1909. It is located on an elevated hill, which
dominates over the surrounding area. The tower
supplied water until after the war. The tower is
supported by pillars placed on an octagonal plan and a
central pillar. The part with the tank was covered with a
mansard roof. The lower floors were occupied by
workers’ flats and utility rooms.
